Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Sol Yoga
Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested nearly $1.5 billion since inception in 1982.

Forest Stewardship Council
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization devoted to encouraging the responsible management of the world's forests. In many forests around the world, logging still contributes to habitat destruction, water pollution, displacement of indigenous peoples, and violence against people who work in the forest and the wildlife that dwells there. Many consumers of wood and paper, and many forest products companies believe that the link between logging and these negative impacts can be broken, and that forests can be managed and protected at the same time. FSC certification is one way to improve the practice of forestry. The FSC was created to change the dialogue about and the practice of sustainable forestry worldwide. This impressive goal has in many ways been achieved, yet there is more work to be done. FSC sets forth principles, criteria, and standards that span economic, social, and environmental concerns. The FSC standards represent the world’s strongest system for guiding forest management toward sustainable outcomes. Like the forestry profession itself, the FSC system includes stakeholders with a diverse array of perspectives on what represents a well-managed and sustainable forest. Yoga Swami
Built in the early 1940’s is an integral part of the history and heritage of yoga tradition in Encinitas and San Diego. Yoga Swami was founded on the ideals of inspiring a different way of being in the world by providing a place of nonexclusive community involvement and consistent practices that inspire its sustainability and the preservation of land. Through its donation-based model Yoga Swami is certified by the Green Yoga Association, a network of businesses, teachers and individuals who practice non-violence to the Earth through business and yoga, as an eco yoga studio. Yoga Swami sits on land certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a part of its worldwide network of mini refuges. The certification recognizes the center’s conscientious planning, landscaping, and sustainable gardening, which allows for wildlife to find quality habitat-food, water, cover, and a place to raise their young. Yoga Swami is in the process of organizing an action group to help save the land on which it is built. The action group is committed to assisting the current owner of the land to identify a buyer who will preserve the land and the building before the land is sold to developers. www.yogaswami.com
